Its not only young children who need our help. Somerville has hundreds of high school students who need help getting the basic supplies to help them succeed.
Every year, our club provides ~200 new quality backpacks full of supplies to in-need students from Somerville High School and Prospect Hill Academy.
The school supplies are donated by both the community and our generous members. The Staples store in Somerville invites our members to setup a table for two weekends outside their store to ask customers to help by contributing supplies or cash. Members have a great time talking with customers, educating them on the need and Kiwanis’s mission.
PUMA and their partner United Legwear have generously donated the backpacks.
Once all supplies and backpacks are collected, the club comes together to count each pencil, pen, notebook, etc. to allow us to purchase what is missing.
A working party is then planned for members, friends, and family to come and spend a couple hours setting up an assembly line to get the back packs full and ready for delivery.

On May 2nd the Somerville Kiwanis Club luncheon speaker was our own Honorary member, Rabbi William Hamilton. Rabbi Hamilton thanked the members for supporting the Congregation Kehillath Israel recent Gala as well as discussing some of the current issues. The members of Kehillath Israel are huge supporters of the Somerville Kiwanis Lucky K drawing, which provides funds for our annual scholarship program. President Dawn Austin reminded the members that our next big event will be on June 2md at the East Somervile Carnival where members will fit and distribute hundreds of bicycle helmets to young riders. Come by our both to learn about the Kiwanis Club of Somerville or to support our work in the community. Following today's meeting, the Somerville Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation held it's annual meeting. Again this year, the foundation will provide twelve $1,000 scholarships to deserving Somerville High School seniors. This year, seventy-five seniors competed for the scholarship awards. ... The Somerville Kiwanis Club Luncheon meeting today was a very special event. Three new members were inducted into the club by Past President/Distinguished Secretary Bob Nissenbaum. Thomas Ferte, Stephanie Deering and Christopher Vining formerly became members today after acknowledging their commitment to the goals and objectives of Kiwanis. Thomas Ferte, who recently opened a French Bakery at 164 Broadway, was today's luncheon speaker.
We always welcome members of the community who want to help us serving the community. There's lots of work to do. Special thanks to Past President Haley Adams. President-elect Tom Austin and Member Micah Gorin for sponsoring these great new members. ... See MoreSee Less
