Its not only young children who need our help. Somerville has hundreds of high school students who need help getting the basic supplies to help them succeed.
Every year, our club provides ~200 new quality backpacks full of supplies to in-need students from Somerville High School and Prospect Hill Academy.
The school supplies are donated by both the community and our generous members. The Staples store in Somerville invites our members to setup a table for two weekends outside their store to ask customers to help by contributing supplies or cash. Members have a great time talking with customers, educating them on the need and Kiwanis’s mission.
PUMA and their partner United Legwear have generously donated the backpacks.
Once all supplies and backpacks are collected, the club comes together to count each pencil, pen, notebook, etc. to allow us to purchase what is missing.
A working party is then planned for members, friends, and family to come and spend a couple hours setting up an assembly line to get the back packs full and ready for delivery.
On Thursday, July 25th, we had a great luncheon meeting at the Burren Restaurant in Davis Square. Nineteen great members attended today's meeting to listen to presentation Steven Flythe – Deputy Director of the Office of Racial and Social Justice for the City of Somerville. Steven also ran in the Boston Marathon!!
It's also Disability Pride Month and our guest speaker spoke about many issues that we are concerned about and affecting residents in Somerville. . President Dawn gave an update on the club's annual appeal (don't forget to donate) which is the club's major fundraiser to support the many events, projects and services that we provide or support throughout the year.
Our current project, to provide 200 backpacks to Somerville High School age students who are in most need of financial assistance, is well under way with the assistance of our program partners at PUMA. The next steps will be to sort the donated supplies, determine what is needed and purchase the additional school supplies prior to packing and delivering the new backpacks donated by PUMA to the participating schools next month.
